eXception, eXtra, and an eXceptional eXtra
Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.
eXception:
Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'...Journey, 1979.
Oh when I'm alone, all by myself, reminiscing about my middle school years, this song frequently comes to mind. I remember being slightly baffled for some time over what all of the lovin', touchin', squeezin' actually entailed. However, I was pretty sure I had the crying part figured out!
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na
eXtra:
Against All Odds...Phil Collins, 1984.
I stand by my original song for the letter A; but, will admit to being sorry I hadn't thought of this one early on. I never saw the movie by the same name, as I was far too busy starring in my own drama, continuously adding selections to my soundtrack.
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
Cuz we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
Oh this made me cry the ugly cry. Each word seemed perfect...
Take a look at me now
Cuz there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me
Is against all odds
And that's what I've got to face
(Tissue, please. Seriously, I had to stop listening.)
eXceptional eXtra:
Time for Me to Fly...REO Speedwagon, 1979.
This gem gives me the stinging sort of tears that can sometimes be blinked away. Did I say gives? Oh, I meant used to, like thirty years ago. (Yikes, that time disclosure alone might make me cry.) Moving on to my favorite rhyme...
I've had enough of the falseness
Of a worn out relation
Enough of the jealousy
And the intoleration
(awesome)
Oh I make you laugh and you make me cry
I do believe it's time for me to fly
Only two more letters folks...
I know it hurts to say good-bye
But it's time for me to fly
I love almost all Phil Collins's songs, and was also delighted to see Reo Speedwagon up there. I remember them!
ReplyDeleteGreat post and good luck with Y and Z! :-)
Big Phil Collins and REO fan. EXcellent eXtra choices! This series has been so much fun!

*sniff...* Journey's album...I was in love with a boy (later engaged to same said boy) who is now a famous zillionaire. We used to listen to that and to Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away." Now I'm old and fat and poor. Oh, well...I'm happy, and that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteeXcept we have on Wegman's here. Or white hots. So I am kinda sad about that.
ReplyDeleteI can remember traveling on a school bus full of choir geeks, belting out Journey's 'NA NA NANA NA' at full volume. If I did that now...I might get arrested. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOMG.....Against All Odds brings tears to my eyes! LOL The Lovin' Touchin' Squee-eee-e-zin! It's making me laugh....oh, yes it's bad enough to cry, but to put up with many minutes of Na Na Na Na taunts? Bullying was apparently in style during the 80's.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices. I love a threefer!!
ReplyDeleteYou can see the finish line, girl. Almost there . . .
PERFECT choices. And now I want a white piano with a pair of white pants.
ReplyDeleteI have all of these songs on my iPod and REO Speedwagon was my very first concert. I was a Freshman in High School and my older brother took me and my cousins. I felt so cool. Thanks for taking me down a sweet memory lane :)

I remember wanting a bit of loving, touchin and squeezin but couldn't fathom at such a young age, where they wanted to touch, or what they wanted to squeeze. Ah the age of innocence.
ReplyDeleteI think I played against all odds so many times, that Phil Collins wrote me a cease and desist notice... :)
I just had myself a Youtube Journey concert the other day! This one. Wheel in the sky. Faithfully. Open Arms. You can't go wrong with these classics.

There's something about the song Against All Odds that always brings tears to my eyes. Oddly enough, I fell asleep during the movie.
ReplyDeleteYour theme has been a wonderful trip back to my growing up years. I know I must be getting older. I watched the original Footloose the other night (the remake is trash) and got a little teary-eyed at the simplicity of it.
ReplyDeleteNever knew the name of that song was loving, touching, squeezing. And pretty sure I didn't realize what all the loving touching squeezing meant. It's fun to look back at songs you used to love as a kid and are like wow, didn't realize they're talking about sex.
ReplyDeleteForgive me for being a bad mom, but I chuckle when my 6 yr old daughter sings lyrics to songs that are totally inappropriate. It's not really bad stuff, songs they play on the radio, no swearing or anything, but songs like Katy Perry's Last Friday Night: subject material inappropriate. I get a kick out of it though. :) Probably won't when she 15 and belting out the songs knowing what they mean, but when they're at the age of innocence, it's funny.
Against All Odds....that one really was/is a tearjerker!
ReplyDeleteOh are you a Gweenbrick http://www.gweenbrick.com/ fan? if not then you should be because everyone should be...have a look at the following clip by Gweenbrick with 'Against all odds' as the theme song, get ready to laugh - loud.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcnmCAT4G1s
ReplyDeleteI STILL love Journey and listen to them once a week or so. Phil Collins is a musical genius. Against All Odds had me and my friends crying our eyes out. That song brings make such memories. Perfect cry myself to sleep after a breakup song.
