Harden My Heart*...Quarterflash, 1981.
*To maintain some level of sanity and to keep this challenge to songs that resonate with me, we have a Q group instead of a Q song.
Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.
I am pretty sure that most of my MTV viewing marathons during the early eighties included this song. I can't say that I have thought much about the tune over the past twenty years, but that doesn't mean that it has lost its familiarity.
I can only imagine what trickery I had fallen prey to back then that made me think I could relate to...
You gave me your word, but words to you are lies
This lady had clearly had enough...
All of my life I've been waitin' in the rain
I've been waiting for a feeling
That never, ever came
It feels so close, but always disappears
Darlin' in your wildest dreams
You never had a clue
Whoever she was singing to must have conducted himself like...well, like a teenage boy.
I could belt out that chorus with such conviction...
I'm gonna harden my heart
I'm gonna swallow my tears
I'm gonna turn and leave you here
But when the song was over, I went right back to flinging my heart at undeserving twelve year old boys. As angry as I could get, I could not seem to turn and leave, or sit at a different lunch table at the very least.
We teenage girls were gluttons for punishment, huh. :)
ReplyDeleteI know the song, never knew their name was Quarterflash. I wonder if they had any other hits or if it was a one-hit only group.
That's a good one. I keep waiting for Bon Jovi to appear......you can't tell me he was a part of your angsty 80's.......(and and post a pic of him too)
ReplyDeleteI loved this song, too. There were so many great, bitter songs by female bands and soloists in the past (remember Donna Summer's 80s song "She works Hard for the Money"? Great song!). You picked the best possible "Q" group! :-)
ReplyDeleteOne of my faves! I belted these lyrics out many times over the years. Le Sigh...
ReplyDeleteAnnnnddddd, now it's in my head again. Thanks. :p
ReplyDeleteI mean, it's no QUICKflash, but I guess it's a pretty good Q song! ;)
It was a great song! Sort of a mantra, lol! Nice choice, thanks for sharing. And now this is going to be stuck in my head all day :)
ReplyDeleteNew follower! I just checked out your other blog and the yummy recipes - don't know if that's good for someone on a diet :D
I actually never heard of the band or the song. But then, I am a country-western guy. Not today's so called country - to me that is just back rock n roll, I mean the real, honky tonk, country.
ReplyDeleteNow it's stuck in my head. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't remember this one until the chorus kicked in. I haven't thought of this song since back in the days and now it won't leave my head! :)
ReplyDeleteThe 80s MTV video I remember the most is Shebop. I can still see my son when he was four walking and bopping in his PJs like he had a cafeteria tray in his hands.

Oh yeah baby, love this song. I certainly had to harden my heart after that drummer boy I told you about broke my heart...

Hmmmmm.......I liked the lyrics, but could've done without the horns in this one.....
ReplyDeleteAnd I always thought that the dude she was singing to was always a drunk for some reason and she was running from him in the beginning of the video....Yep, definitely alcohol because why would you play anything plugged-in while standing in water? Then she's going to take a blow-torch to his sorry ass.............like the precursor to Evanescence's "Call Me When You're Sober."
You've got to be brave to wear a one piece leotard.
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'.
Heather
Damn lunch tables. If we only knew then....
ReplyDeleteI loved that song! Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to go buy it now and add it to my phone. Aww Quaterflash <3
