Purple Rain...Prince, 1984.
Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.
I never actually saw the movie Purple Rain, nor am I certain of what purple rain might refer to. However, there were certainly plenty of phrases in the song that hinted towards feelings I was sure I could relate to. I could pretend someone was singing to me...
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
(This never happened, by the way.)
I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end
(Typically tearing up by this point.)
Purple rain, purple rain
I never meant to cause you any pain
(This never happened, by the way.)
I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end
(Typically tearing up by this point.)
Purple rain, purple rain
By the time Prince got to...
Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing
It's time we all reach for something new
That means you too...
It's time we all reach for something new
That means you too...
The force and emotion with which those words left his lips made it impossible to not feel something.
I kind of got over him when he became "the artist formerly known as..." What was up with that??
ReplyDeleteOh, Prince. Gotta miss him. Purple Rain was a good one. Wonder where he is today.
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the first albums I owned. I had the trifecta: Madonna's Like a Virgin, Michael Jackson's Thriller, and Prince's Purple Rain. I loved that album. It would be many years until I actually saw the movie. The album is so much better.
ReplyDeletePurple Rain was certainly his masterpiece. Such a lot of angst for a little guy!
ReplyDeleteGIRL you need to get your Netflix on and rent the movie an 80's CLassic! Good music now we are stuck with a bunch of annoying bad Beiber music Blah
ReplyDeleteI never saw it either. I'm pretty sure my parents thought it was inappropriate for their middle-school aged daughter.
ReplyDelete*sighs in heavy contentment* I played this over and over again...and that was just last week!
ReplyDeleteThe movie was a huge let down for me and Prince certainly is no actor. But how I loved that man and imagined lots of little prince juniors and princesses running around or happy purple palace. :)
I never rated Prince but I suspect I'm a bit old for his kind of music.
ReplyDeleteI NEVER saw Purple Rain, EITHER!!! Weird - I thought I was the only one!
ReplyDeleteI never cared for Prince either, just noticed Rosalind's comment as I was typing. Like her, probably age, lol.
ReplyDeleteHope the challenge is going well for you
A-Z
I never saw Purple Rain either. LOL And I know only a few of Prince's songs.
ReplyDeleteSonia Lal
Never saw the movie, but the the song.
ReplyDeleteYou didn't miss anything with the movie but this song.... holy wow. It still stops me in my tracks. Prince is so talented. Writer and musician.
ReplyDeleteHeather
Oh Prince...I never saw the movie. But i do like this song.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in HS way before Purple Rain was released, I went to see Prince, Time and Vanity Six. My date and I were the only white people in a ten block area. I thought I was going to *die* But everyone at the concert was so nice to us....they told us we were the coolest white people in America (yay, us)!!! ;P It was a great concert, too...
ReplyDeletePurple Rain is an epic song. Yep! I think this album was the most played album in our sorority house....or maybe it was second to Tears for Fears....
I have much purple love for Prince. I remember jumping up and down so hard at his concert I broke the heel off my shoe! Love the movie, love the soundtrack. Prince is still the purple king all these years later.
