O is for...

One Night Love Affair...Bryan Adams, 1985.

Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.

I had the Reckless record album, yes, the black disc that you had to put on a turntable. I could lift that needle and place it down, just so, in the space between the grooves. The crackling sound told me I had hit it just right. As long as I didn't dance around my room with enough force to cause a skip, I was set.

He was not necessarily the silent type, but oh how he caught my eye. We were sophomores in high school, and I don't think I finally looked away (in other words gave up) until the end of junior year. On three isolated occasions during that time-frame I was his before the night was through.
How was I to know
To let my feelings go
I had some delusion, perhaps gleaned from silly love song lyrics if you can believe it, that some stolen kisses and hand holding were going to lead to an epic relationship.

Oh the disappointment...
But I lose control
As I watch you go
All my sense say I'm in this much too deep
Now you're out of reach
And I was no good at...
One night love affair
Pretendin' we don't care
Oh, and now we're left with nothin'
Crushed by a crush.

  1. I love Bryan Adams. I have this fantasy that some day I will be in a hotel in Toronto and there, in the hotel bar, will be Bryan Adams, sitting at the piano and singing in that gravelly voice. And he will ask me to sing along with him.

  2. My favorite Bryan Adams song: Everything I do, I do for you. You know, the Robin Hood song. Saw that movie at a drive in theater so many years ago. Love the song. Good movie too. Wish the drive ins were still around.

  3. Love that song! We went to a Bryan Adams concert in college (80's). Music was great but he was crabby that night. Didn't make a good stage impression.

  5. Oh my goodness! Bryan Adams was my first concert (8th grade). I made a cake when "Everything I Do, I Do it For You" hit #1 to celebrate. Seriously.

  6. Great choice. I had a crush on our drum major from sophomore year until he graduated the following year. Long story...but he did take me for a ride in his '65 vintage mustang convertible, and he did kiss me after he dropped me off...but then on Monday he showed up at school with a hickey...not from me. I was heartbroken.

  7. Am I showing my age, I still HAVE record albums... And the turntable. From then. I am going to stop now. Ahem.

But I must say, you were braver than I was, I couldn't gather up enough courage to talk to the guys I liked "that way", and the few that I did, thought I was a dork, nerd, or little kid, or some combination of the three, and so that didn't help...

  8. This is one of the hidden shames on my iPod- I love this song! Still get a little teary-eyed when I sing along to it too.

  9. Ahhh, I was wondering if you would end up going with this one or changing to Phil. I'm glad you stuck with Bryan. :)

And those high school crushes. Le Sigh. At least you had something from them. I was always the too painfully shy girl that would just stare longingly at her crushes, and wait all day for that one moment that I passed him in the hallway, and then surreptitiously (except not really) gaze at him as he passed. I would have given anything for a one night love affair!

  10. Gotta love a bit of 80s. And Bryan Adams! My fave of his is Summer of '69.

  11. I miss vinyls (I've got boxes of old 45s stored away) and turntables and the crackling of the needle.

I was never into Bryan Adams, although I loved his voice. Then he opened a pub near to where we used to hang out (pre-children)and was one of the nicest guys that you could ever meet. Not sure if he still owns it now. :)
