S is for...

(The) Smile Has Left Your Eyes...Asia, 1983.

Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.

In 1983, I would have been wearing so much black eyeliner that it would have been difficult for anyone to be able to tell anything about my eyes. I obtained my copy of the Asia Alpha album by sticking a penny on a Columbia House record club card, and returning it in the postage paid envelope. It was all fun and games until the membership requirement had to be met. I think I still have the other nine free albums I got as well, plus the four I had to purchase at regular price.

Back to the song...I was heading off to ninth grade, and probably had very little understanding of who the solitary man was; but, I certainly recognized a great rhyme when I heard one...sympathize and eyes? Perfect!

The song also had plenty of hints at sadness...
It's over now it's not my fault
See how this feels for you
(Just the right hint of teen pettiness)

I never thought I'd see you
Standing there with him
So don't come crawling back to me
(Easy to decipher lyrics)

I was once again convinced that my singing was spectacular, and the instruments just added to the melancholy. Beyond that, I didn't know where to go or what to call my own.

  1. Oh, Asia, brings me right back to High School :)

  2. Asia. I know I had a 45 of one of their songs. Not this one. I had to go look them up cause it's been a while, but I think it was Only Time Will Tell. Ahh, the good ole days. :)

  3. I joined that club! Rumors was one of the albums I got for free! Loved Asia. Funny, The Transporter came to me last year and was all excited about a "new" group he'd found called Asia. He was a bit upset to know that The Engineer and I also liked them...since then he's become a Boston, Pink Floyd, Rush, and Led Zeppelin fan...He's now saying, "Mom, if this is one of YOUR bands, PLEASE don't tell me. it totally ruins it for me. Poor kid. Such problems.

  4. Asia was a band that I actually saw in concert. The keyboard guy wore jogging shorts, and all he did was run from one machine to the next. It was all very tiring!

  5. Nope, I've got nothing. Stumped me again, Andrea! Good job. ;)

  6. Oh, I remember this album verra well, lass.....oh, yes.....LOL I love it....just the right amount of teen pettiness.....oh, those memories....

  7. Gosh that is a long time ago! I remember it and now I'm sitting here trying to remember what I was doing...just started work, I think and spent a lot of time outside workhours in bars :-)

  8. I am cracking up -- not the song, exactly (athough I am coming back to read every one of your posts because 80's music was MY music) but the Columbia Record Club. OMG--I was the MOTHER who had to clean up the confusion and bewilderment of my two tween sons who BOTH became members of that club, and then didn't want the mothly offerings. What a mess!
That taught ME a lesson I'll never forget. I think they have both moved on merrily without any notion of the horror they put me through!!! HAHAH thanks--you are super!

  9. OMG there was a sappy Asia song that I missed? How the heck did that happen???

  10. Haven't heard that one in a while. Certainly takes me back.

  11. Wow. So many bands. Where have they gone.

  12. Black eyeliner IS still in, RIGHT????
