U is for...

Under Pressure...Queen & David Bowie, 1981.

Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.

I admit that I do not recall exactly what words I used to sing when this song played. I am positive they were incorrect now that I have reviewed the actual lyrics. The line "under pressure" was clear as a bell, and that is probably all that mattered to a pre-teen who was convinced she was being absolutely crushed by the pressure in her life.

It's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming "Let me out!"

I probably didn't know what questions they were asking with such desperation...
Why, why, why?

Yeah, I had no idea...
Insanity laughs under pressure we're cracking
Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance

Amazing how a song, that felt so familiar at a time when I couldn't even begin to comprehend its message, can still be so relevant over thirty years later. Now I have an idea of what they were talking about, and it's frightening.

  1. Wow. I never knew this song was Queen. Must be David Bowie singing. I've never really liked this song, which is kind of funny because I really like Queen. Again, must be David Bowie. :)

  2. What a fabulous song. It does resonate even today, doesn't it? And their voices together are fantastic and powerful. Good choice!!

  3. maybe I was living under a rock cos I have never heard of this song before! But now that I have, its so going on to my playlist!

  4. Hi Andrea. Visiting from A to Z. I remember this song and like you, I can't say I thought much about what it meant when I used to listen to it. They certainly do approach some of the big questions of life. Thanks for making us think a little more deeply about it. God bless, Maria from Delight Directed Living

  5. I don't remember the song at all, or the group...I'm sure it was a long time after my "hip" time. Songs though are often used to express what people can't say. But, I'm not sure lots of folks actually think about the words, it's more about the music, they rhythm and or dancing, I think.

  6. Oh, this is one of my all time favorite songs. Such angst in those lyrics! Surely Freddy Mercury knew he was dying by then, and that fed the emotions of the music. Freddy was one of the most talented singers there ever was, and the world is sadder without him in it.

    Here is your random trivia...
And Brian May of Queen has a PhD in astrophysics, of all things. How would you like to have him for a professor?

  7. I love how something can remain timeless for a person... or how the same song (book, poem, etc) can mean different things at different times in life. Great song pic! :)

  8. This is such a great song. It sounds the way you feel when you're totally stressed out.

  9. Nice. You made me miss Queen and David Bowie all in one post!

    Great song and collaboration.

You've given me a great idea for a blog post or fest.

    Wrong song lyrics.

    That would be a hoot!

  10. I so love this song.....I really do. Queen + David Bowie = Musical Perfection......

    and I'm not even going to tell you what I used to sing for these lines {'cause I was so way off}

Chippin' around, kick my brains 'round the floor
These are the days - it never rains but it pours
People on streets - people on streets

  11. I'm embarrased to admit I never knew who sang this song. You are like my rock god tutor.
