I is for...

If You Leave...Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD), 1986.

Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.

It is nearly impossible for me to separate this song from the soundtrack (on cassette again of course), from the movie (Pretty in Pink), from the other movies (namely Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club). Longing to hang out with the cool kids - those cool kids on the screen (Emilio, Judd, Ally, Molly, and Anthony) while identifying with the geeks, and cheering loudly when they find happiness. One movie's princess was another movie's outcast. I may have shared the nickname of Molly Ringwald's character in Pretty in Pink, Andie, but felt more like an even less cool version of Duckie most of the time.

Okay, I will try to move on to the song itself. The bargaining of the first verse...just one more night and THEN they we would go our separate ways.  Pulled together, yet torn apart...heartbroken with no tears...not letting go, but running the other way. Can the teenage mind be summed up much better than in these contradictions and confusion? Every second, every moment...we had to make it last.

We'll meet again someday......

  3. Oh yes...the 'push me-pull you' of the teen years! I don't miss that part!

  4. This might be the best "bring back the teenage memories" post of your series yet.

  6. :D LOVE this song, and Pretty in Pink! My oldest daughter want to name her son Duckie (if she ever has one). Did you know that the original ending of PIP had Andie and Duckie ending-up with each other!!! John Hughs should have never changed it. I'm Team Duckie all the way. Blain can go suck an elf!

  7. I LOVE this song, and all those movies. This one, however, is special, for several reasons, one of them being the drum major of our marching band...but that's waaaay too long of a story to get into here...perhaps it will be a post someday.

  8. Yay! All caught up! Ahem . . .

Yes, this song totally encompasses all of those John Hughes-esq era teen angsty dramas. This was a great scene in Pretty in Pink with the school dance and all the swirling 80's fashion. :)

  14. The Breakfast club, still one of the best movies ever. I wasn't really a OMD fan, that was more my older sister. But this was definitely one of their better songs, along with Joan of Arc. :)

  18. I suddenly feel very old and un-teenage like. I guess this is just priming me for my own future teenagers, right?

  19. It's very unmanly to admit this, but Pretty in Pink is possibly my favourite movie of all time. Killer soundtrack too. Duckie doing Try a Little Tenderness with Annie Potts staring in the record store still makes me grin like a fool.
