C is for...

Careless Whisper...George Michael, 1985.

Angsty 80's songs, from the soundtrack of my life, is my theme for the A-Z challenge this year.

Guilty feet have got no rhythm. You know what other kind of feet lack the ability to keep a steady beat? Drunk ones. However, drunk voices are pitch perfect. The setting: a high school party in 1986. I remember being caught up in an embrace, as my dance partner and I serenaded each other...rather loudly. Ah yes, while time can never mend the careless whisper of a good friend, we figured we were safe based on volume alone.

I was a sucker for someone taking time out, of whatever other deep teenage conversations might have been going on, to share roughly five minutes with me. I was even more dazzled if he brought flawless lyrics to the dance. I can still hear the words we shouted at sang to each other as the song intensified...

...Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things
We want to say...

We could have lived that dance forever. Such feeling, such passion, such...oh, song over? Beer empty? Sure, see ya later.

  2. Careless Whisper has *always* been one of my favorite songs. Even the remake by Seether. There's something so mournful about that single moment of losing that friend...

  3. Bl;es ya soppy self. heehee
I recently wrote a #fridayfact describing why George wrote that song. Not nearly as thought provoking as your piece on your memories. It's rubbish fro out children who don't have a soppy song at the end of the night. I waffle don't I? lol
Thanks for sharing. Will definitely come back to see your song choices.

  5. This is such a neat theme that so many can relate to....for me it's the 1960's music. Although, I'm fairly familiar your time slot via my son who reminded me often of our 'Music Generation Gap'. Here's a scenario he loves to tell: I asked my Mom if I could go to the Pat Benatar Concert with friends. Her answer was...Who's HE!!!

That was just the beginning of my 80's Music Education...so, Yep, I know about George Michael's 'Careless Whisper'. Thanks for stopping by my Letter B post 'Bluebonnet Lore'. I appreciate your being a 'Minion'. I hope you come again.

Thanks for the comment yesterday. It was just what I needed. Really, thank you.

  12. I loved George Michael as a teen. I'm a bit pissed off at him now for not staying out of trouble. Why can't celebrities behave? We have to...

  13. This song always made me really sad....because of the music video. By 85 I was addicted to MTV and the local Boston video channel, V-66. The video is about a man that cheats on the woman he loves with a beautiful fling, his deep regret and sorrow, seeing his girlfriend's heart broken as he comes clean....At least that's how I remember it.

  16. That is really romantic, whether you meant it to be or not. I was on the loose and fancy free in the 1980's. in between husbands (my forever husband Jim and I are still together)
and music was my middle, middle, MIDDLE name. Sometime I shall let you know what the other middle names were but frankly, music is the best of the rest!

  18. Ah, the good old serenade song. I'll always have a soft spot for Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic thanks to a late night serenade.

  19. Ah George! He never woke me up before he "go-go-ed". Now that I think about it, that was probably a good thing!

  21. I didn't listen to a lot of the music that my friends did in high school, but I have 'caught up' and actually recognize the ones that you've mentioned. My blog is more loose than yours, I am using the titles of movies, books, and songs, but just as a jumping off point. I am looking forward to seeing the other songs in your 'song book'.

  22. Ah, Careless Whisper. When George Michael's music was actually good. I miss those days.

  23. Hi Andrea - great to meet you on the A-Z (and I see your other site has recipes!!! Yum, I'm off there in a moment). I adored George Michael too (this is showing our age, isn't it) and loved every song, even when he started getting more "serious". The Christmas one..."Last Christmas I gave you my heart...." Now I'll be humming that all day!

  24. I know nothing about music. But the memory you invoke on the dance floor is so vivid. I guess music can have that power. I remember Careless Whisper being sung on the karaoke at almost every family gathering for at least a decade whilst growing up. Seeing my dad crooning this as he shuffles those not so guilty feet to the beat, that's my memory.

    Thanks for sparking that.
